Public Sails

A Newport sailing cruise is fantastic!  Newport is the sailing capital of the United States and has one of the prettiest harbors in the world!  Sightsailing offers daily, scheduled day and sunset sails aboard two sailing vessels: Aquidneck and Sightsailer, while Starlight sails exclusively for private charters.

On our boats guests may help raise sails, take the wheel and sail or sit back and relax. No sailing experience is required!  Each boat offers a different sailing experience.

Our boats are not  "tour" boats where we provide constant narration through a microphone ("on your left, on your right"), however our captains and crew do know the history of all the sights you sail past and will point out the highlights.  If you ask them, they will elaborate!

On a typical sailing cruise we sail through Newport Harbor, into Narragansett Bay where the Newport Bridge is and along  the Ocean Drive of Newport.  Sights along the way include Goat Island, where the Navy made most of the torpedoes used in WWII, Fort Adams, the largest, best preserved fort on the East Coast, Clingstone, a one of a kind house perched on rocks, Hammersmith Farm, the summer Whitehouse of JFK, yacht clubs, race boats, historic churches and countless other sights. The scenery is spectacular and the sailing is generally first rate!

The wind and tide vary daily, so no two trips are exactly alike.  We try to sail as much as possible, however if there is no wind, we will start the iron mainsail (the motor) and motorsail.
